The issuing of a second travelling document to a senior official of the Limpopo department of agriculture, whose first passport was confiscated because it was obtained fraudulently, will be a subject of investigation before his fate is decided.
Msunduza Dlamini, 34, was arrested on July 25 together with his cousin, Nelisiwe Sithole, after being found to be working in the country illegally. Their South African passports were confiscated after authorities alleged they were acquired fraudulently.
Sithole, 32, is a senior manager for land and agrarian reform, while Dlamini is Sithole's deputy in the same department.
The two are currently suspended.
Their case was yesterday postponed to December 11 for trial.
After their arrest recently, they were granted R5000 bail each on condition they report to Home Affairs offices every Monday and Friday. They were also ordered to pay a further R5000 repatriation fee each.
During their appearance in the Polokwane magistrate's court yesterday, Dlamini and Sithole stood motionless in the dock.
Their lawyer, who identified himself only as Mr Kruger, argued that his client, Dlamini, could not be held responsible for the incompetence of Home Affairs officials who issued him with another passport.
Magistrate Joe Abrahams ordered immigration officials to probe the authenticity or legality of Dlamini's second passport and to establish how it had been acquired.
"For now you, Dlamini, should surrender your current passport to be investigated."
