The City of Johannesburg nurtures youth through its yearly Battle of the Books competition, which was established in 1998 for pupils in Grades 6 and 7.

The awards function was held at the Johannesburg City Library. Impala Crescent Primary School from Lenasia, Johannesburg, are this year's winners.

The inter-school knockout quiz bases its questions on selected books provided by the city's libraries.

The books are chosen for their levels of reading and writing styles. After six months of reading and three months of knock-out quizzes, four teams, out of an original 149, made it to the final.

The finalists were Impala, De la Salle Holy Cross Junior Primary School of Victory Park, Khand'ubuhle Primary School of Pimville and Hurleyvale Primary School in Sandringham.

Awards were also given for Story Skirmish. This competition is for Grade 4 and Grade 5 pupils who speak English as a second language. A total of 139 schools entered.
