US student molested

An exchange student from the US was raped at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, police said yesterday.

An exchange student from the US was raped at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, police said yesterday.

Police spokesman Inspector Michael Read said the incident took place at the university's Howard College campus residences on Monday morning.

He said details were sketchy and police were investigating the case.

Meanwhile, Durban's afternoon Daily News newspaper yesterday quoted the university's investigations manager, Peter Korte, as saying he believed the rapist was "an insider".

Korte told the newspaper that the student, who lives at the residence, did not see her attacker as she was not wearing her glasses.

She was taken to King Edward VIII Hospital where she was treated and antiretrovirals administered.

The report said the student had been moved "to a safe house" where she was receiving counselling.

Her friend and fellow exchange student, Abdul Ghani, was quoted as saying: "She's been here since January and loved this place." -Sapa
