Mama Angel spent a rollicking gospel hour at Braamfischerville in Soweto during a presentation to a seniors club.
The members came in their best dresses and suits to receive Christmas hampers from Sowetan. The hampers were arranged by the Roodepoort Care for the Aged Association.
They sang rousing gospel songs praising the Lord for his bounty as they had an early start to the festive season.
"We thank Sowetan for what you have given us. Please do not disappear after this, but continue to be our friends."
The Braamfischer Service Centre for the aged is housed in a shack in the RDP township near Dobsonville, in Soweto. It was founded seven years ago by Alexander Ndaba and Ephraim Hutchinson.
"We wanted to keep ourselves busy and productive," Said Ndaba. "We meet every Monday and Tuesday here at our clubhouse.
"We attend workshops at the Age in Action in Roodepoort where we are taught about good health, food gardens and exercise.
"There are 25 of us and we are looking for more members. We recently acquired a brick-making machine which we will use to raise funds for our centre."
Auxillary social worker Joyce Mahwayi and care worker Phindile Nyathi look after the members, bring them groceries and check on their health.
"The pensioners sew, knit and make shoes which they sell. They also make shoes and have food gardens." Mahwayi said.
"We take them on outings and transport them around when they attend sports days where they compete with other centres for prizes.
"We help them with their electric bill and the materials for their projects.
Mahwayi said they chose the projects according to the skills the pensioners had learned during their younger days.
