A police officers' party ended in sorrow when an officer drowned in the Vaal River on Tuesday afternoon.

Inspector Gordon Schass, 38, of Ennerdale, drowned while swimming with colleagues in the river.

Vaal Rand police spokesman Trudie Wilken said the police officers were having a team building party when the tragedy occurred.

Wilken said Schass was one of 25 police officers who had attended the function.

She said Schass drowned at about 5.30pm and police divers who had been called to the scene retrieved his body at about 7pm.
