Hot on the heels of the Charity Mile November Handicap, which attracted a host of television and sports personalities to Turffontein Racecourse earlier this month, Gauteng's premier racing venue is once again the place to be when the prestigious Steinhoff International Summer Cup is run next Saturday.
The yearly event, now in its fifth year, attracts about 10000 enthusiastic racing fans. This year's field is led by classy gelding Our Giant, who combined beautifully with celebrity and former Miss South Africa Thuli Sithole to win the 2007 Charity Mile, and secure the R100000 first prize for her charity on the day, Resthaven Ministries.
Our Giant is the tote favourite to win the spectacular Grade 1 feature, which offers R1,5million in total prize money. This year's race day takes on an "international flavour". Racing fans will be able to sample a variety of foreign cuisine from several countries where the race sponsor, Steinhoff International, has business interests. South Africa, Kenya, China and New Zealand are among the countries waving the culinary flags in the food court.
The day will not be short of entertainment either, and family attractions include a "Flag" dance and a Dixie band playing between races.
South African and World Freestyle and Slow Dance Champion Tanith Blom will give a dancing demonstration to revellers from the trackside. Parents can bring their little ones along to enjoy the day's festivities and a play centre for kids will provide supervised activities including pony rides, jumping castles and carousels .
Entrance is R30 a head and R20 of this will be donated to the Steinhoff Extended Family Programme . Entrance for children under 12 and pensioners is free. Secure public parking is available.
