Dangerous car-spinning sport has popular support

Riot Hlatshwayo

Riot Hlatshwayo

Mpumalanga police have issued a strong warning to reckless drivers who spin cars, notably the BMW 3 series, in the area.

Gusheshe, a moniker for the series, remains a favourite among the crowds when the car-spinning spectacle takes place on Sundays at various places, including KaNyamazane, Nelspruit, Barberton, Valencia and Matsulu.

Vehicle owners usually spin their vehicles dangerously but with passion, to the appreciation of spectators who applaud and shout excitedly.

This, however, poses a serious danger to the lives of the spectators, especially children, as well as the drivers themselves.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Captain Leonard Hlathi told Sowetan that this kind of behaviour would not be tolerated.

He said that those caught in the act would face criminal charges.

"Both the spectators and the drivers are putting themselves in serious danger.

"All it takes is one miscalculation and that can lead to a tragic accident," said Hlathi.
