Police in Limpopo have opened a case of attempted murder against a police officer who allegedly shot a student during riots at the University of Limpopo's Turfloop campus two weeks ago.

Spokesman Senior Superintendent Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed yesterday that a case of attempted murder against the officer had been opened and was investigated.

"The case is, however, investigated by the Independent Complaints Directorate after the matter was referred to them for investigation," said Mojapelo.

The suspect, who cannot be named until he appears in court, is also allegedly linked to the shooting of three other students who were injured in the fracas.

One of the students, Neria Ramoditsetse, was shot in the head and is fighting for her life in the intensive care unit of Polokwane Hospital.

A bullet is still lodged in the head of the 20-year-old student.
