A former senior official in the Limpopo department of roads and transport will spend both Christmas and New Year behind bars after a court refused him bail yesterday.
Camuel Thosago, 55, a former senior manager for supply chain management, was arrested for allegedly sodomising a 10-year-old boy in Polokwane last week.
He appeared in the Polokwane magistrate's court and was denied bail.
This was after he had tried to convince the magistrate that he was a student at the University of Limpopo and that if he was denied bail, he would not be able to study.
Despite the pleas, Thosago was remanded in custody and his case postponed to February 8 next year.
He also told the court that he was running a business and asked to be released on bail because his business would close down.
Thosago also claimed his children would suffer if he was kept behind bars.
According to the charge sheet, Thosago allegedly found the boy playing with his uncle at a flat in Ladana near Polokwane.
Thosago allegedly asked to drive with the boy to Seshego.
He allegedly only returned the boy to its mother the following morning. The boy, according to the mother, was behaving strangely. The boy was then taken to a district surgeon who confirmed penetration.
Thosago was arrested the following day.
Meanwhile, the boy's mother told Sowetan yesterday that his son could still not walk properly.
"He experiences difficulties when walking and still has a running stomach," said the mother, who may not be named to protect the identity of the boy.
Polokwane police spokesman Captain Mohlaka Mashiane cautioned parents not to allow strangers or even relatives to travel with their children unaccompanied by other adults.
