A woman from KwaZulu-Natal was charged with child theft and illegal immigration after she was found with a stolen baby in Swaziland.

The woman was found with a baby she stole from a 17-year-old mother in Mtubatuba a week ago.

The baby was only one day old when it was kidnapped.

Lindiwe Mngomezulu was on her way home after being discharged from hospital last Thursday. A woman she was sitting with in a taxi from the hospital offered to hold her baby while she went to a shop.

The woman had disappeared with the infant and her bags when she came out of the shop.

Police followed the woman to Swaziland after a tip-off that the stolen baby was in Nkundusi near Mtubatuba. But when they arrived at the woman's home, they learnt that she had fled to Nhlangano in Swaziland.

The police immediately headed to the home of the woman's boyfriend in Nhlangano.

"Police were accompanied by the Swaziland police to Nhlangano. The suspect was found with the baby at her boyfriend's home," said police spokesman Jabulani Mdletshe.

The woman was arrested and appeared in the Nhlangano magistrate's court the following day for illegal immigration and child theft. She was sentenced to five months imprisonment or a fine of R500.
