The Gauteng provincial government plans to use the new Diski 5 GP soccer tournament as one of the 2010 World Cup legacy projects.
The five-a-side tournament was launched in Southgate, Johannesburg on Saturday by Barbara Creecy, the MEC for arts, sports, culture and recreation.
Boys and girls from the five regions - Johannesburg, Motsweding, West Rand, Sedibeng and Tshwane - will take part in the tournament.
Creecy said the winners will compete in the regional finals at the Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton on November 25.
The finals will be part of Soccerex, a soccer exhibition that is set to attract the who's who of soccer and related business globally. They will serve as curtain-raisers for the international five-a-side tournament where selected local and international legends will compete.
The Gauteng government will host the event, which is expected to generate just over R7 billion for the province's economy, until 2010.
Creecy said they were working closely with the South African Football Association to ensure that organised clubs also benefit from the tournament.
"The tournament will comprise 96 community-based clubs and will be held at selected malls in all the regions in the province as part of the build-up to Soccerex," she said.
"This has been the first experience in the province and so far it is proving to be a significant instrument to uplift the standard of soccer in South Africa and create a positive sports climate across the continent."
The MEC said she was excited that young girls were also part of the tournament.
