'SA soccer needs peace and soon'

Seemingly these days attending Premier Soccer League meetings is not ideal for one's health.

And it does not matter whether you are for sponsorship bonuses or not as Sowetan observed at the league's AGM held at this high-profile hotel in the leafy Sandton suburb.

As the members of the Fourth Estate patiently waited - or was it impatiently - outside for the end of the proceedings, some club officials emerged for short visits to the toilets.

Others actually looked like bolting out of the hotel areas for the safety of their homes.

Some of the poor souls were able to secretly whisper laments like "man, how I long for the good olden days (?). Now that that we have money, it's tensions all around".

One afterwards said: "Because of this money we cannot talk to each other any more."

The PSL club bosses were to discuss the spreading of the R70 million gratuity but had to defer the matter as they are due to meet the Sport Portfolio Committee again at a date still to be decided upon.

Kaizer Motaung missed a special flight to Mafikeng where his Kaizer Chiefs played Bloemfontein Celtic in a Telkom Knockout semifinal.

On a trip to the toilet a "too cool" Motaung also joined the journalists for a minute or two to watch the match on TV.

Earlier club bosses shared a palatable lunch even though it appears some were reluctant to do so. They clearly avoided eye contact.

What a pity that some plates were left half full with food from the buffet. It also took gutsy officials and some PSL staffers to chat with the media.

The not-so-liked by some, Peter Mancer, head of the PSL's marketing agent (Diversity Management), looked very troubled. He made endless trips to have a puff or two, probably with some wishing he would actually not return to the room at all as they apparently questioned his presence.

Then a dejected looking Peter Koutroulis, Mpumalanga Black Aces' director, emerged from the meeting 10 minutes before the end mumbling and throwing his arms in the air as he headed for the exit.

Our soccer needs peace and stability and that must happen sooner than later.
