Thriller back on ASTV

Sello Rabothata

Once in a while a match in the local Premiership produces such a high standard of football that it becomes the focal point of discussion on the state of the game.

One such game was the league match between two of South Africa's top sides, defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, which was played last Sunday.

It was a thriller, especially for the neutrals, that left many football fans asking why South African teams play brilliant and thrilling games in flashes, but lack consistency.

Sundowns won that game 2-1 and the African Soccer Television show will screen the highlights, among others, on SABC Sport's Laduma programme on Sunday.

Other highlights feature other leagues around the continent.

As Reuters reports, Benfica Luanda and Primeiro Maio overcame more fancied opposition at the weekend to book places in the final of the Angolan Cup.

Primeiro Maio edged past last year's league and cup double winners Primerio Agosto 4-3 on penalties in Luanda on Sunday after a 1-1 draw in their semifinal tie.

On Saturday, Benfica Luanda went through to a second successive final after edging Petro Atletico 6-5, also on penalties, after a 2-2 draw. The final will be played in the capital on Sunday. In the Malawi League the high-flying MTL Wanderers were held to a 1-all draw by Red Lions.
