Health falls flat on the floor

The biggest hospital on the continent, Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital, is in the news again - for the wrong reasons.

The biggest hospital on the continent, Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital, is in the news again - for the wrong reasons.

Seriously ill patients with drips sleep on the floor because the hospital cannot provide them with beds.

An official claims there are beds available but the admission process takes a lengthy period. Why does the administration not simplify the rules so that patients are treated quickly and efficiently?

Standards at all health facilities have decreased drastically and there seems to be inertia on the part of the Health Department to fix the problems.

A country's progress is judged by its education and health policies.

South Africa lags behind many Third World countries in this regard.

The government needs to overhaul the department thoroughly so that there is service delivery and patients are the primary concern.

It is easy to see why many people refuse to be hospitalised.

Besides, the patient's charter adopted by the health authorities commits hospitals to standards that uphold and affirm the dignity of those admitted to the institution

A big hospital such as Bara cannot be struggling to deal with elementary problems such as allocation of beds in this day and age, given the amount of state resources allocated to it yearly.
