The boom in the construction industry is being hampered by the shortage of skills and the HIV pandemic.
Craig Jessop, managing director of Group Five KwaZulu-Natal, said yesterday the industry was faced with a huge challenge of unskilled labour.
The company was offered the contract to build the R2,6billion Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
Jessop said the HIV-Aids pandemic had compounded the skills problem.
He said as of now 30percent of the staff at the construction site were HIV positive.
Jessop was addressing delegates during the second provincial strategic indaba that ended yesterday, at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.
He said despite the increasing developmental demands in the province, it was faced with a huge challenge of unskilled labour.
"The problem is that some people don't want to be trained and this creates problems.
"To try to alleviate the situation, our company has been implementing a training programme for our employees as well as other people who are interested. This has been ongoing for three years now ."
Group Five also offered bursaries to students who were interested in studying in the field of construction.
