Feud has bloody history

The two rival Soweto taxi associations whose gun battle claimed the life of a young mother on Wednesday have been baying for each other's blood since 1996.

This week their feud bubbled over and cost Phindi Bangeni her life. The 30-year-old mother of an eight-year-old boy was on her way to work when she was shot.

The Bara-Meadowlands and the Meadowlands-Dube-Noord (MDN) taxi associations are fighting over the Meadowlands route.

Amon Zulu, a member of Bara-Meadowlands, claimed that the two associations met the registrar in charge of the Meadowlands route, Thami Ngwenya, on Monday.

He said MDN affiliates vowed to come to the Bara taxi rank "to do what they thought was right". - Tebogo Monama
