Metro police yesterday raided liquor outlets and places of entertainment in the Pretoria CBD that resulted in the closure of two popular taverns.
Metro police joined hands with the City of Tshwane's department of economic development and the national departments of Health and Home Affairs in Operation Festive Season. Building inspectors, waste management and emergency services personnel, SAPS liquor squad and inspectors from the Gauteng liquor board were in attendance.
The operation began at busy Marabastad where Melody's Tavern was closed down for good.
Metro police spokesman Alta Fourie said: "We just had to close that place down. Everything about it is wrong. It has no fire prevention equipment, is unhygienic and the smell is unbearable."
In Struben Street, Gendo Pool House and Restaurant was also shut down and the owner fined R12800.
At 02 Tavern in Struben Street, the owner was fined R3100 for failure to comply with emergency fire regulations, entertainment licensing and dumping by-laws.
The owner of Home Base Tavern in Paul Kruger Street was fined R5300 for tampering with the emergency exit, failing to produce an entertainment licence, dumping and harbouring illegal immigrants in the building.
