Three gunmen were arrested yesterday after a shootout with police near the University of Witwatersrand.

The police had received a tip-off about a planned robbery at a business in Parktown, Johannesburg. Officers went to the area and waited for the men to arrive.

They spotted a car fitting the description of one of two the robbers were using. While they were following the men, one started shooting at them with an R5 rifle and the police retaliated.

Police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini said the men swerved into Empire Road and headed towards Braamfontein. The suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot.

The arrested men will appear in the Johannesburg magistrate's court tomorrow. - Kamogelo Seekoei
