More than a hundred families were left in the cold yesterday after being evicted from a plot they were illegally occupying in South Hills, Johannesburg.

The families claim to have lived on the plot for more than 10 years and had refused to vacate the premises.

Police had to be deployed while the owner and his security guard evicted the angry crowd, who were becoming violent.

The squatters sat outside the plot looking lost and confused hoping that somebody would come to their rescue.

Ward councillor Beverley Turck promised that she would find temporary accommodation for her people.

The owner of the plot, who described himself only as Rob, said he had given them notice to move more than two years ago. - Zinhle Mapumulo
