The safety of patients, doctors and nurses at public hospitals has understandably become a key concern.

Recent events show staff concerns over safety at hospitals can no longer be ignored. They are a matter of life and death, especially with the admission of injured criminals a common occurrence.

A male patient was shot and killed at close range in the trauma unit at Chris Hani- Baragwanath Hospital on Monday - barely 24 hours after a heavily pregnant nurse was assaulted at the Pretoria Academic.

A medical student was raped at Bara early this year. Babies have been snatched from their cots and others from their mothers at hospitals.

Implementing stringent security measures at health institutions must be prioritised by relevant government departments.
