The speaker of Thaba Chweu Municipality Wonder Langa died in a car accident in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, on Saturday afternoon.

Police said Langa was killed when the car he was driving lost control and ploughed into nearby bushes and hit a pole.

According to the police, he was flung out of the car and died on the scene.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane told Sowetan that when the accident occurred there were five people inside the car.

"When we arrived on the scene we found Langa lying next to the car," Khoabane.

"After checking his pulse we realised that he was already dead and the other four people were trapped inside the mangled vehicle. The emergency services team had to use jaws of life to free them."

Khoabane said after the injured people were freed from the wrecked vehicle they were taken to Lydenburg Hospital.

The 15-year-old Mahlatse Sihlangu died on her arrival in hospital and the other two who have been identified as Vusi Mdluli, 34, and Mahlatsi Malumane, 15, were reportedly convalescing in hospital, while another 15-year-old, Zodwa Maimela, was discharged from hospital yesterday.

Police said they suspected that the car belonged to the council.

"We are still investigating in order to establish the cause of the accident. We cannot divulge more information about the accident as the details are still sketchy," said Khoabane.

"The relationship between Langa and the other four people is not known.

"And another puzzling thing about this accident is that we don't know where he (Langa) was going to with the minors," he said.
