Ermelo's Ithafa Secondary School walked away R60000 richer after being announced winners of this year's global warming and climate change school competition.
This is a yearly competition by the agriculture department aimed at creating awareness among pupils about the effects of global warming and climate change.
Putsoa Makua, spokesman for agriculture department, said the programme also creates awareness about the environment and aims to inculcate sound environmental practices in learners.
"The programme has grown phenomenally from 36 schools in 2006 to 78 schools selected from 214 entries this year," said Makua.
"Pupils were competing on poster design, drama production and a model design.
"Those in lower grades compete in the drama and poster categories while those in the higher grades up to Grade 10 compete in the model design category," he said.
He said the school's winning model was an energy efficient kitchen that uses solar energy to heat water. The model saves electricity and water.
"Smaller actions such as switching off geysers during daytime and using energy efficient light bulbs contribute immensely to lessening global warming," said Makua.
MEC for agriculture and land administration Dinah Pule encouraged communities to create wealth from waste by recycling.
Other winners are Sithuthukile Primary which won the drama category and pocketed R10000 while Evulingqondo Primary won the poster category and also pocketed R10000. All the prize money would be used to improve the school's environment.
