SABC journo tops awards

A report on the fate of young boys who find themselves on the wrong side of the law has earned SABC journalist Hazel Friedman the Journalist of the Year title and R100000 in the bank.

Friedman of Special Assignment was named the best in the field at the Vodacom journalist of the year awards ceremony held in Johannesburg on Sunday.

The winning feature, titled For The Boys, was an expose of corruption and negligence by prison warders entrusted with the safety of juvenile prisoners. The yearly event consists of 12 categories where the best in the print, electronic and broadcast media are chosen.

Robyn Smith of e.tv was named theoverall winner in the TV general news category for her piece on children who are sold by their parents or close relatives to be sex slaves. Sifiso Yalo of Sowetan is the Cartoonist of the Year.
