A former dormitory employee at the Oprah Winfrey school for girls in the south of Johannesburg is expected to appear at the Vereeniging magistrates' court today.

According to Gauteng police spokesman Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini, the 27-year-old woman was arrested by the family violence, child protection and sexual offences units last Thursday following investigation to the alleged abuses at the school.

The state-of-the-art school made headlines last year when it was launched in a glittering occasion that attracted celebrities that included former president Nelson Mandela. It was meant to cater for young girls from disadvantage backgrounds across colour line and aims to empower them with leadership skills.

The arrest of the woman last week, was the continuation of the controversy that the school has attracted since claims of abuse surfaced earlier this year.

Dlamini said at least seven victims have made statements to the police upon which allegations of assault, indecent assault, crimen injuria and soliciting under-age girls to perform indecent acts were investigated.

He said a team of experts was appointed to speed up the investigations.

"As a result, the investigations has been finalised and criminal proceedings are due to start," Dlamini said.
