Drugs worth more than R80 million have been found at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg in the past two days.

Police found 66kg of cocaine at the airport on Saturday. The drugs have a street value of R30 million. This discovery followed another bust on Friday in which drugs worth R50 million were discovered at the same airport.

Police spokesman Dennis Adriao said the drugs were found in the cargo section wrapped in brown papers and hidden in the machines imported to the country. He said the cargo were from South America.

"We have found the drugs as we intensify security at the airport as we lead to the holiday season. Members of the crime intelligent unit, organised crime unit and cargo anti-smuggling unit are working hard to fight any efforts to bring drugs into the country. They were able to stop these drugs from reaching our streets," Adriao said.

He added that in the past two years, police have uncovered more that 530kg of drugs in the airport.

He said a Nigerian man was arrested last year after he was found in possession of 114kg of cocaine.
