Three suspected hitmen have been arrested a day after the Gauteng government threatened to shut taxi ranks around Johannesburg, if taxi violence did not stop.

The provincial executive council urged police to make arrests in the conflict between the Dobsonville-Roodepoort-Leratong-Johannesburg Taxi Association (Dorljota) and the Faraday Taxi Association.

Both operate from the Bree Street taxi rank and have been fighting over which should operate from the Clearwater Mall and Makro ranks.

On Sunday, two taxi operators from each association and a passenger were killed at the Clearwater Mall and on Hendrik Potgieter Road.

Police have confirmed the arrests. - Kamogelo Seekoei
