Police acted swiftly and pounced on five armed men poised to hit a giant wholesale store in Pretoria yesterday.

One man was arrested outside Rambo Wholesalers and led police to his four accomplices, who were waiting in Atteridgeville for his signal.

Pretoria police spokesman Inspector Paul Ramaloko said it appeared the man who was arrested at the wholesaler was posted there to assess the situation so that he could call his accomplices to strike.

Police seized a machinegun, two handguns with the serial numbers filed off, and a VW minibus.

Ramaloko said the men, aged between 20 and 40, would appear in court on Monday on charges of attempted armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms.
