Community leader Maureen Morgan has passed away.

Morgan, 46, who resided at house number 9 Steenbok Street, Leondale, in Germiston, died after a short illness last Friday.

Morgan was an influential person who dedicated her life to the development of women's sports in the province.

At a young age, she starred for Ivy All Stars netball team, an affiliate of the Soweto Netball Association.

She also represented the then Southern Transvaal Netball squad that participated at various tournaments during the apartheid regime.

In 1999, she was appointed a committee member of the City of Johannesburg Sports and later became deputy president of the South African Municipal Workers Sports Association.

Apart from sports activities, she was an active member of the Baptist Worship Centre in Vosloorus, and also the secretary of Letsema in Women on the Move in Leondale.

Born on January 10 1961 in Mzimhlophe, Soweto, Morgan matriculated at Thabo High School in Naledi.

She was married to Shadrack Morgan in 1988. They were blessed with two sons, Prince and Kagiso, and a daughter, Mathapelo.

They then moved from Soweto to Leondale in 1996 where Maureen played a vital role in promoting sports.

A distraught Shadrack described her as a sweet person, darling, mother, sister, friend and a humble wife.

A tearful 10-year-old Mathapelo said: "I feel sad about the passing of my mum. She was creative, loving, caring and a good mother. Robala ka kgotso mama.''

Morgan will be buried tomorrow at the South Park Cemetery. The service will be held at Alston Primary School in Leondale at 8am, and the cortege leaves for the cemetery at 11am.
