All matric pupils in the Western Cape must rewrite an English first language paper on November 23 because the original paper was leaked.

The chief invigilator at SACS in Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa's oldest school, did not follow proper procedure when opening and checking packages of papers on October 10, the education department said.

"The investigation looked at the incident in which paper 2 was handed out in error [during the paper 1 exam], as well as the subsequent leak of some of the content," said Sindi Shayi, the acting head of the department.

The department suspended the school chief invigilator's contract and issued a verbal warning to the school's head of the English department. - Getrude Makhafola
