Mpumalanga MEC for health and social services William Lubisi will today visit Delmas to assess the extent of the diarrhoea outbreak in the area.
Department spokesman Mpho Gabashane said Lubisi would be briefed by the joint management operations committee deployed to the area, and visit local clinics and homes in the affected areas to get the exact number of affected people.
"There seems to be an increase in cases recorded in the area. In the last 24 hours we have recorded a further 46 cases," Gabashane said.
No deaths have been reported so far.
The Democratic Alliance in Mpumalanga said the outbreak in Delmas highlighted the importance of providing clean running water to all citizens.
"The typhoid outbreak in Delmas in 2005 should have mobilised government to make Delmas a priority on their to-do-list since lives were lost," said the DA's Jaco Londt.
Londt said residents of Delmas did not have easy access to clean running water.
"As a preventive measure, the department of local government and the Delmas municipality must provide clean water in tanks at schools, clinics and other strategic points so that we can avoid a similar outbreak as in 2005," said Londt.
