A one-year-old toddler has died after being run over by a Metro vehicle on Tottenham Drive in Phoenix, north of Durban.

Police spokesman Inspector Michael Read said the incident took place in a residential area.

Read said the driver had parked the car and asked for directions to find where a burst water pipe had been reported.

"He reversed and heard a bump. On inspection he found a baby boy on the ground," said Read.

He said paramedics declared the toddler dead on the scene from severe head injuries.

"It's unclear whether the baby was on the road itself or in a driveway near the road.

"And it's unclear what the baby was doing there."

A case of culpable homicide has been opened but no arrests have been made.

l Meanwhile, police shot and killed a man suspected to be a kingpin of a hijacking syndicate in the greater Durban area on Wednesday afternoon. One of his accomplices was wounded.

The suspects were wanted for hijackings in the KwaNdengezi, Marianhill and Pinetown areas.

Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said police were patrolling on Marianhill and Richmond roads when they came across a green Toyota Corolla with three occupants.

"Police circulated details of the car and it was linked with criminal cases in Chatsworth.

"They asked the driver to pull over but he tried to flee. Police gave chase and the suspects started firing at them," he said.

"Police retaliated and shot two of them, leaving one dead," he said.

Mdunge said the third suspect managed to flee.

"Police recovered a stolen laptop in the vehicle and several firearms."

The arrested man is expected to appear in court soon facing cases of attempted murder, possession of stolen property and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
