Another underground accident claimed two lives at Kloof mine's number four shaft yesterday.
The miners died in an explosion 300m below the surface, the mine confirmed yesterday.
This is the second fatal incident at Kloof in a month. On October 10 three workers died when they were hit by a skip loaded with spillage rock.
"I can confirm that two miners have unfortunately lost their lives, and three others were injured this morning at Kloof mine due to an explosion. The two were part of a 10-man team working on the stope and one of the fatalities was the team leader," said Goldfields' spokesman Andrew Davidson yesterday.
"Kloof management decided to halt all blasting, cleaning and drilling at the shaft and a full investigation will be conducted," Davidson said.
He said the Department of Minerals and Energy had also issued a "Section 54" for the shaft where the blast took place. The section stipulates that risk assessment be carried out before any mining operations can continue. He said two departmental officials were on the site.
The names of the victims would only be made available once families were informed.
