Teacher unions and parents' organisations in KwaZulu-Natal have called on the department of education to take responsibility for the safety of teachers and pupils .

The call comes after a teacher at Marian Primary School was admitted to hospital after he was stabbed outside the school gate on Monday.

The KZN Parents Association spokesman, Sayed Rajack said the way the government had distanced itself from safety and security within schools, had been disappointing.

"According to the Labour Act, the department of education, as an employer, is responsible for safety of teachers as they are employees of the department," said Rajack.
