A 47-year-old man died after losing control of his car which crashed into a cemetery.

The vehicle ran over several tombstones before coming to a halt. Police said Siboniso Biyela was travelling from Eshowe to Entumeni on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast when he lost control of his vehicle along a sharp bend near Mpushini Park Cemetery.

Superintendent Jay Naicker said Biyela was travelling with three other passengers, including an eight-month-old baby, when the incident happened.

"The vehicle hit a telephone pole before going into the cemetery. Biyela died at the scene. Two other passengers and an eight-month-old baby suffered serious injuries. They were taken to the Eshowe Provincial Hospital for treatment," he said.

He said it was not clear what caused Biyela to lose control of the vehicle. Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
