Dale White, an anti-apartheid activist and former priest, died at his home on Monday.
White, 73, of Wilgespruit in Roodepoort, was executive director of the Wilgespruit Fellowship Centre from 1965 to 1993. The centre is home to orphans and provides a wide range of projects to develop people's skills.
The selfless and hard-working priest received the Order of the Baobab in Gold for his contribution and commitment to the objectives of the centre.
His foster daughter Laetitia Haines said: "He did not complain about anything. He died calmly."
She said White lived a fruitful life.
"I did not know my biological father until I was 16, but Dale was there. He is the one who cut my umbilical cord," Haines said.
Lucas Kopano, who came to the centre when he was 11, said: "He was everything to us."
White was born in Port Elizabeth in 1934. After matriculating, he studied for a BA degree at the University of Cape Town, then trained in theology at St Paul's College in Grahamstown.
At 22 White was ordained as a priest in the Anglican Church in Krugersdorp. He also worked in Sophiatown and Soweto.
White is survived by his wife, Laetitia, two daughters, two grandchildren and 15 foster children.
He will be buried at St Paul's Anglican Church in Jabavu, Soweto, next Thursday.
