It is always good to receive a newborn in this section of Sowetan. This month's newborn is the new Toyota Auris. It is here for a long-term test. We welcome the Auris to the Road Rave family.
The Auris has been around since August, even though it does not seem to be making its way quicker to many driveways in South Africa as with its younger sister, Yaris.
But the Auris represents the fresh ideas of the Japanese and you can't exactly fault it, though some people think Toyota should only bring out performance engines.
Compared to the car it is replacing - Run-X, the Auris boasts new levels of quality, styling, comfort and convenience, and driving dynamics. Typical of all modern Toyo-tas, the Auris benefits from exceptional interior space, utility and comfort.
The new Auris has been designed to appeal to the heart as well as the mind. It is practical and comfortable, making driving a pleasure.
The interior boasts quality finishing and generous equipment levels and room.
This new 5-door hatch from Toyota is offered with a choice of four engines, each matched to a specific transmission specification for optimised efficiency - the option of diesel power, the first time for a Toyota in the volume passenger car market, and the option of Toyota's advanced M-MT transmission for those that prefer the convenience of an automatic shift transmission.
Three specification grades are offered with the "RT" and "RS" grades applicable to the 1,4litre and 1,6litre capacity derivatives, and "RS" and "RX" offered with a 1,8-litre petrol and 2,0-litre diesel models.
Ours is a 1,8 RS delivering 100kW of power and 175Nm of torque.
The RS is fitted with a RDS Radio/CD combination with 6-CD changer and MP3 compatibility.
