A 30-year-old pregnant woman, her twin sisters, a cousin and two men were arrested yesterday after reporting a fake kidnapping to the police.
The six were arrested by the police at Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg, who reacted swiftly after the woman's husband had laid a charge of kidnapping.
Those arrested are aged between 18 and 21 years.
Police spokesman Captain Keke Motsiri said the pregnant woman left her home on Friday morning on her way to work, but did not return.
"On Sunday morning, the husband received an anonymous call that his wife had been kidnapped and he should pay R5000 ransom for her release," said Motsiri.
He said the man told the "abductors" he did not have enough money and would go to the bank the following day.
"On Monday morning the 'kidnappers' called the husband again and gave orders that they should meet at Stretford railway station in Sebokeng," said Motsiri.
The man went to open a case of kidnapping at the police station. While he was at the police station, he again received another call about the change of venue.
"We followed him to Ennerdale, where he was ordered to hand over the money. The kidnappers called again and told him instead to go to the SOS Children's Home in Ennerdale," said Motsiri.
They called again and changed the venue to a nearby scrapyard. Police pounced and arrested the wife and two men .
