Vaal Rand police are looking for a gang of armed ATM bombers who struck twice in the early hours of yesterday.

Police swung into action after two Standard Bank ATMs in Vanderbijlpark and Evaton were blown up.

Police spokesman Captain Veli Mcera said explosives were used to commit the crimes. The robbers fled empty-handed in both incidents.

Mcera said the first ATM to be blasted was at a Vanderbijlpark shopping complex at about 1am. "Eight men planted explosives at the machine and a passerby saw what was happening and warned the police, who immediately went to the scene."

The robbers fled in two vehicles.

The Evaton ATM was badly damaged after robbers had blasted it. "The gang also left empty-handed after being disrupted by the police," said Mcera.
