'More land in black hands'

Up to 20percent of agricultural land in some municipal areas has already moved to new black owners, Free State Agriculture said yesterday.

Up to 20percent of agricultural land in some municipal areas has already moved to new black owners, Free State Agriculture said yesterday.

Manager of Free State Agriculture Henk Vermeulen said a survey will be conducted within its structures to determine how much agricultural land had already moved to black ownership.

"From certain feedback, it seems that the state's assumptions are wrong that only 3percent of land has been transferred."

Vermeulen said preliminary statistics indicated that there were some municipal and district municipal areas where 12percent, 17percent and 20percent of land had been transferred to black owners.

Referring to restitution claims, Vermeulen said many claims in the province were publicised in the Government Gazette without the land owners even knowing it. "We have put structures in place to . help members to reply to the claim within the 30 days period set for feedback." - Sapa
