Police in Pietermaritzburg have launched a search for the mother a new-born baby after a dog was seen dragging body parts of an infant in France informal settlement in Alexander Road.

Inspector Joey Jeevan, said police received a report about a dog and body parts of a new-born baby in the early hours of yesterday morning,

"Police were called after the parts were found lying in a yard in an informal settlement.

"On arrival at the scene, police found what appeared to be the head and hands of a new-born infant lying in a yard," she said.

Jeevan said initial investigations led police to the premises' owner, who informed police he was as shocked to see his dog dragging the body parts into the yard.

"At this stage, it is not clear how the parts ended there, but we are investigating a case of concealment of birth," said Jeevan.

Meanwhile, police said the body of a six-year-old boy was found in a small dam near the Victor Lamberti Shooting Range in what appears to have been a drowning.
