A Mpumalanga man, who allegedly raped and impregnated his 17-year-old daughter with the excuse that he could not resist her beauty, has been denied bail by a Tonga magistrate.
The 47-year-old man was not asked to plead and will appear in court again on November 8.
The teenager, who may not be named, told police that the alleged rape took place when her mother was away and she could not go to school because she was looking after her younger sister.
Police said the girl told them her father started raping her last year.
"She said that on the last occasion, about two weeks ago, her father asked her to bring him some water. When she entered his room he allegedly closed the door, ordered her to put the young girl down and undressed and raped her in the presence of her younger sister," said police spokesman Constable Mzwandile Nyambi.
Nyambi said it was not the first time the man had been arrested for raping his daughter.
"This man was arrested and charged after raping the very same girl. However, the charges were dropped after his family forgave him.
"This year he allegedly raped her again and ended up impregnating her," said Nyambi.
"Last year he got away with it when the girl was ordered by her father to have an abortion because he said it was an offence to have a child with one's father," said Nyambi.
He said the teenager's mother told police that her husband did not deny having sex with his daughter because, he said, he could not resist his daughter's beauty which drove him to commit incest.
The teenager, who is six months pregnant, has threatened to commit suicide and family members are keeping a close eye on her.
This transpired during a meeting where police and the community planned to march in protest against the high spate of rapes in the area.
"We heard residents say they were going to attack the man who impregnated his daughter.
"On our arrival we found that the man had already taken refuge as the chief's right-hand man.
"We were directed to his hiding place, where he was subsequently arrested," Nyambi said.
Mpumalanga MEC for safety and security Fish Mahlalela was quoted in a local newspaper as complaining about the rising number of rape cases in the Nkomazi municipal area.
