Kenyan mom pips teen

NAIROBI - Kenya's Rose Chepkemboi Chesire, a 25-year-old mother of two, outclassed Chinese teenage pupil Li Lu Lu to win the Nairobi International Marathon yesterday.

Chesire, who started training for the marathon only three months ago, overtook early pacesetter Lu after the 35km mark and never looked back to win in 2hrs:44,14.

Lu, a high school pupil from Liaoning province in southern China, was a distant second in 2:47,37.

It is the second time in a row that a Chinese athlete has filled the runner-up spot in the women's race.

"I was running very well and was happily on course to winning my first ever marathon," said Lu who blamed the Nairobi altitude for the defeat.

Magdalene Syombua, a winner of the Peachtree 30km Road Race in the United States early this year, was third in 2:51,27.

John Njoroge completed a Kenyan clean sweep by winning the men's race in 2:15,50.

Meanwhile, Wilfred Kigen of Kenya won his third straight Frankfurt Marathon yesterday, setting a course record of 2:7,58.

In the women's race, Melanie Kraus of Germany caught Svetlana Zakharova late in the race to win in 2:28,56.
