Two sisters from Orlando West, Soweto, have accused the Department of Home Affairs of having ruined their lives.
Thembi Nkosi, 29, discovered she was married to a stranger, and her sister Thuli, 27, said the department had told her she shared her name, surname and ID number with someone in KwaZulu-Natal.
Thembi said she went to the Labour Department two weeks ago to register for unemployment insurance, only to learn that she had a husband. She found out the department had registered her as having married 29-year-old China George Chukwukere.
"I was shocked and devastated when I heard about the marriage.
"The Department of Labour also said that according to their records, I was working for a company called International Wagon Enterprises."
Thembi went to Home Affairs to check her marital status and learnt the name of her registered spouse. The marriage was registered in September 2004.
The marriage certificate says the wedding took place in Cullinan, outside Kempton Park.
Noel Vuma, a Home Affairs official, said Thembi should submit an affidavit explaining that she had never been married.
Her sister Thuli lost her ID in 2004. She has battled ever since to get a new one and has been unable to register her daughter's birth.
