This national Social Services Department is leading a registration drive for creche or daycare owners or managers to register their centres under the Child Care Act.
The act provides for:
l Establishing children's courts and appointing child welfare commissioners;
l Protecting and caring for vulnerable children;
l Adoption; and
l Establishing special institutions to care for children.
The department manages the registration of about 9000 Early Childhood Development (ECD) sites and, among others, provides subsidies for children's physical care, support systems, daytime nutrition and pays for personnel.
To register, a creche or daycare centre, representatives should visit provincial social development centres or phone department representatives Zingaphi Jakuja at 012-312-7381 or Jonas Mashigo at 012-312-7793, or provincial representatives:

Another national campaign that aims to transform and improve the ECD sector is the Absa and Sowetan Early Childhood Development Awards.
It awards prizes and offers support for training and development of ECD practitioners and equips organisations and centres. Prizes are given for:
l Best ECD practitioner;
l Best home-based care centre;
l Best community-based care centre; and
l Best resource and training centre.
Absa, Sowetan, South African Congress for Early Childhood Development, Office on the Rights of the Child, the Education Department and SABC aim to help create a holistic approach to child development.
