The proposed BRT is an integrated public-transport system that will link all other modes of public transport to the bus network.

The Johannesburg minibus taxi industry has been identified as a leading partner. City officials have already started to implement the system.

During the signing of a memorandum of understanding between city officials and the leaders of the minibus taxi industry on Tuesday, guests were taken to Ellis Park, where construction work is underway on new bus terminals.

The Rea Vaya system will allow buses to travel from Ellis Park to the south and north of Johannesburg.

Buses will travel along main roads at intervals of between one and three minutes during peak hours.

Bus stations will be situated every 500meters along the proposed routes. Passengers will be able to enter the enclosed facilities using a system of pre-paid fares, including smart cards that will also be used on taxis.
