New market research showing that economic status influences South Africans' levels of happiness, whereas marital status does not, should naturally raise some eyebrows across our society.

This may not be surprising because the study, which essentially holds that money seems to be more important than marriage in South Africa, debunks widely held perceptions that wealth and marriage together result in greater wedded bliss and much happier joint lifestyles.

Most instructive is the observation by the study that, whereas being married was associated with higher happiness levels in the developed world, there appeared to be no significant relationship between marital status and wellbeing in South Africa.
