Sigfried Mpota Manthata, a former Soweto civic leader, has died at the age of 78 He was born at Ga-Manthata Sebakeng Botokwa in Limpopo.
He joined the Soweto Urban Bantu Council in 1970 and fought for the building of schools in the area, among them
Letsibolo, Kgatelopele, Matubeng Lethabo primary schools and Tladi Secondary. He represented Tladi, Moletsane and Naledi townships in the Soweto UBC.
He was chairman of Mamathibi and Lethiba secondary schools. Manthata was wellknown for forming the anti-crime makgotlaaround Soweto.
These crime prevention units set up patrol groups that monitored the streets at night and searched for criminals.
Manthata left the UBC in 1988 and went to Limpopo where he opened his own business. He lived there until his death after a long illness.
He was an active member of the African National Congress in Limpopo.
Manthata is survived by his wife, nine daughters, a son, 17 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
