South Africa's population has grown by almost a quarter over the last decade to more than 48million, according to Statistics South Africa.

The estimate was released yesterday as part of the 2007 Community Survey, the biggest household survey ever undertaken in South Africa.

The survey, based on about 255000 households, was to fill the gap created when the government decided to have censuses every 10 years, instead of every five.

It also showed a significant increase in households using electricity and with access to piped water. - Sapa
