An 18-month-old baby drowned in a waterhole in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said that Nomfundo Mathe's mother, Lindiwe, was busy weeding her yard in Nkodibe reserve at Mtubatuba when the accident happened.

She thought that the child was inside the house playing with her brother Khaya, 14.

"However, the mother was called by a neighbour's child who reported that the baby was floating in a nearby waterhole," said Mdletshe.

He said the hole had been dug by a neighbour as a storage dam in case there was a drought in the area.

Local councillor, Mduduzi Ntombela, said he was not aware of the incident as he was not in the area at the time. He acknowledged that there was a huge water problem in the district.

"Three years ago, pipes were put in, but we realised that the scheme was not working," he said.

"We reported the matter to the district authorities. They are working on the problem. It is a priority that we supply water, considering that the area is affected by drought," said Ntombela.
