Sasco joins T-shirts fray

The South African Students Congress (Sasco) has joined the chorus of critics who condemn T-shirts bearing the names of ANC politicians instead of the organisation.

"Normally, any publicity material of the ANC is designed to convey the policies and programmes of the ANC," Sasco president David Maimela said yesterday.

"They are normally sanctioned by the collective to mobilise people for a specific programme, the general elections is one example.

"The new destructive tendency of wearing sloganised T-shirts (bearing faces) all in the name of support for an individual leader is destroying the progressive culture of collective leadership in the ANC."

Maimela was echoing similar complaints by ANC national chairman Mosiuoa Lekota, who criticised the tendency at the funeral of the late ANC activist Norman Mashabane at the weekend in Limpopo.

But Young Communist League spokesman Castro Ngobese accused Lekota of being on a political offensive against Jacob Zuma.
